Stephen Curry Joins Davidson as Assistant GM While Playing for Warriors

Stephen Curry, the superstar of the Golden State Warriors, is taking on a new role as an assistant general manager for the basketball teams of Davidson College. With this decision, he becomes the first active player in a major U.S. league. A college program is seeking a professional sportsperson to hold an administrative position.

Regardless of his new title, Curry will remain dedicated to his playing career with the Warriors. Curry, his wife, Ayesha, and longtime supporters Don, Matt, and Erica Berman are working on an eight-figure fund to support Davidson’s basketball programs at the school.

Curry’s Commitment to Davidson’s Future

Curry, who spent three years at Davidson between 2006 and 2009 before becoming an NBA legend, stressed his commitment to guaranteeing that the next generation of scholar-athletes has access to high-level opportunities.

“The Davidson experience is top-notch,” Curry said. “My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni, and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high-character student-athletes to have that same experience.”

Curry and his team will collaborate closely with Davidson’s administration, using resources from Under Armour’s worldwide sports marketing division to improve the program. His vision is to ensure that Davidson’s student-athletes can compete at the highest level in the evolving college athletics landscape, where NIL opportunities now play a significant role.

A Strategic Move for Davidson Basketball

Davidson’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, Chris Clunie, underlined that basketball is still the school’s top sport.

“When our basketball programs are successful, they provide much-needed revenue and exposure to support all our athletics programs and raise the overall visibility of the college,” Clunie stated.

The Davidson men’s basketball team is currently 16-15, and the addition of Curry’s expertise and funding is anticipated to enhance the program’s long-term competitiveness.

Warriors Coach Steve Kerr’s Playful Take on Curry’s New Role

Curry’s new advisory duties at Davidson were primarily advisory, but Warriors owner Steve Kerr couldn’t resist joking about his superstar’s dual role.

“I’m wondering, is he going to clean house? Is he going in there and firing everybody? I don’t know, we’ll see, he’s got a big job on his hands,” Kerr said with a laugh before the Warriors’ game against Portland.

Kerr reassured fans that Curry’s main focus remains on the NBA, adding, “If he asks me if he can leave and not play a game so he can go scout some college games, I’m probably going to say no. Although it is Steph Curry, so I’ll probably say yes actually. But I hope he does not ask.”44

A Lasting Legacy at Davidson

Curry’s return to Davidson in this unique capacity marks a new chapter in his strong connection with the school. More than just a basketball player, Curry is positioning himself as a leader who wants to invest in future athletes, ensuring they have the resources to thrive both on and off the court. Curry and Matt Berman are assistant general managers who aim to make a lasting impact by mentoring student-athletes and shaping Davidson’s basketball future, all while leading the Warriors on the court.
