Carmelo Anthony to Headline Australia’s HoopsFest
The National Basketball League (NBL) of Australia is preparing for its biggest weekend ever, and Carmelo Anthony, an NBA legend, will be the main attraction.
HoopsFest, a four-day celebration of sports, culture, and entertainment, will take over Perth, Western Australia from September 19 to 22, 2024.
Anthony, who has been designated as the Global Ambassador for the NBL’s Next Stars program, will be involved in various events, giving fans a unique opportunity to interact with the basketball icon. His involvement is a reflection of the NBL’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and its growing reputation on the global basketball scene.
“I’m excited for my trip to Australia and to experience firsthand the global impact of basketball,” Anthony said in a statement. “The NBL’s growth and success is rooted in their commitment to nurture emerging talent, and I can’t wait to do my part to help the league reach new heights on the world stage.”
HoopsFest 2024 is promising to be a cultural experience that is unlike anything else, with high-energy basketball action, food, music, sneakers, and art. The 2024-25 season will begin with an event that will bring teams from both leagues together for the first time in history.
The season opener on September 19 will be attended by Anthony, as Tasmania JackJumpers, the reigning champions, will take on Melbourne United.
NBL CEO David Stevenson hailed Anthony’s involvement as a’massive coup’ for the league.
“Carmelo has an authentic and genuine interest in growing the NBL and showcasing it on the world stage,” Stevenson said. “Having people of Carmelo’s stature involved solidifies the competition’s standing and reputation on the global landscape.”
Rita Saffioti, who is also the Deputy Premier of Western Australia, agreed with Stevenson’s sentiments.
