Donovan Mitchell Is Going for 10. Adidas Just Made It Official

Most athletes who sign with a shoe brand in their rookie year spend their career hoping the relationship holds. Donovan Mitchell has been with Adidas since signing a multi-year deal on July 11, 2017 — before his first NBA game — and has never played a professional minute in anything else.

On October 1, that loyalty got its largest reward yet.

Mitchell signed a new multi-year contract extension with Adidas that will take him through a 10th signature shoe with the brand, making him the seventh active NBA player to accomplish the feat. The company that has dressed him since Louisville now commits to dressing him through one of the most exclusive milestones in sneaker history.

Mitchell joins a group that includes LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Damian Lillard, and Klay Thompson — players whose names have defined the NBA for a generation — as the only active players with 10 signature shoes from the same brand. The list is short. The company is rarefied. Mitchell has earned his place in it.

The DON Line and What It Represents

The D.O.N. Issue line — the acronym standing for “Determination Over Negativity” — launched with the Issue 1 in 2019 and has grown into one of Adidas basketball’s primary signature franchises. The adidas DON Issue 8 is currently available, with new colorways dropping throughout the year. The new deal will see the line continue with the DON Issue 9 and DON Issue 10, with more potentially on the horizon after that.

The DON line has been notable for its accessibility — priced below many competing signature sneakers and widely available at retail rather than limited to premium drops. That decision was deliberate and reflects something consistent about how Mitchell has approached his public identity. He is a franchise player who has never cultivated an air of exclusivity. The shoes match the person.

The Community Piece

The deal is not purely commercial. Beyond footwear, the renewed partnership includes additional support for Greenwich Country Day, Mitchell’s former high school in Connecticut. Adidas will provide further resources to help the school expand access to educational opportunities for students from underserved communities.

The connection to Greenwich Country Day is personal. Mitchell has spoken about the role his high school played in his development — the environment, the coaching, the community that helped shape his game and his character. Building that support into a shoe deal rather than keeping philanthropy separate from commercial partnerships is a choice that says something about how he negotiates and what he prioritizes.

Mitchell signed a four-year, $273 million maximum extension with the Cavaliers in July. Now the Adidas extension. Both deals signed in the same offseason. Business is good for Donovan Mitchell — on the court and off it.

Why This Milestone Matters

Getting to a 10th signature shoe with the same brand is not a given for anyone. Most athlete shoe deals do not survive long enough to see that kind of continuity. Brands move on. Athletes change companies. Markets shift. The relationships that produce a tenth shoe together are built on mutual commercial success — both sides have to be winning for the partnership to keep going.

Mitchell and Adidas have been winning together for nine years. The DON line has a distinct identity in the market, a loyal consumer base, and a price point that has kept it accessible rather than aspirational. That is not an accident — it is the product of consistent collaboration between an athlete who has stayed true to his identity and a brand that has supported that vision.

Mitchell is entering his 10th season in the NBA and his fifth with the Cavaliers after beginning his career with the Utah Jazz. The timing is clean. A decade in the league. A decade with the same shoe company. An offseason that produced a $273 million Cavs extension and now a multi-year Adidas deal. Whatever comes next, Mitchell enters it with his business aligned, his brand stable, and his community investment built into the structure of the deal.

That is what a decade of loyalty looks like when it pays off.
