Los Angeles, CA — October 17, 2024 — Ahead of her official presidential campaign launch, Vice President Kamala Harris sat down for a powerful and exclusive conversation with NBA stars Chris Paul and CJ McCollum, addressing the state of the Black male vote. The 15-minute interview, which premieres on PlayersTV today at Noon ET, sheds light on the pivotal role of Black men in the electoral process, exploring challenges and opportunities for increased voter engagement.
The discussion, moderated by CJ McCollum, an NBA player and Executive Board Member of the Social Change Fund United, and joined by Chris Paul, co-founder of the fund, was filmed during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The two NBA stars, who are widely respected for their activism and leadership off the court, spoke with Vice President Harris about the importance of mobilizing Black male voters ahead of a crucial election year.
In the interview, Vice President Harris highlighted the urgency of civic participation, especially within the Black male community, stating, “There are forces at play trying to make people feel small, that if they engage in the system, they cannot have an impact… In any democracy, the people must have the power, and representation matters.” She further emphasized the historical and ongoing barriers Black men face in voting, urging them not to be silenced.
Chris Paul also spoke candidly about the disengagement of Black men in the voting process, noting that political conversations are often absent in Black communities and even NBA locker rooms. “A lot of times, in locker rooms, guys talk about everything, but not about politics… There’s an education aspect of it that I think is very important,” Paul said, underlining the need for vulnerability and open dialogue.
Produced by Chris Holliday and Jeron Smith of Incubation Lab, this timely interview continues the Social Change Fund United’s mission of empowering underrepresented communities and promoting social equity. With a focus on spreading awareness and encouraging voter participation, the interview serves as a critical reminder of the importance of every vote, especially in the Black community.
