“So my dad [Tito Horford] is the first-born Dominican player to play in the NBA. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, played for a few years, and tried out for the Boston Celtics; you know, they didn’t make it. The evidence is there. He’s in the media guide with the Celtics uniform,”Horford said. 

 

“He’s somebody that I grew up watching and was able to learn a lot from. A lot of the things that I am today are, in part, because of him. He’s always been very supportive in my NBA career, making sure he’s always there for me, giving me advice, and being there for me. It’s been great to be able to share this experience with him. I’m blessed enough to have my son around me and the team. I feel very privileged to be able to have him around and to experience this NBA life and world.”

“I enjoy every minute,” Tito shared. “This is what I live for, and this is what I enjoy – traveling with him and having fun. He’s such a great son, and I admire him so much on and off the court. So, it’s my pleasure to take some time to travel with him.”

Tito’s influence on Al’s youth, is a reflection of a father who has not only influenced his son but also inspired himself. He recalls that Al’s youth was when their bond was cemented.

“When he was younger, he used to follow me,” said Tito Horford. “He used to go to practice with me when I played overseas, when I played for the Dominican National Team, even when I was here in Milwaukee – he was little, but I used to bring him to practice with me.”

“He was a big influence, just because the reason I got interested in basketball was because I was watching him,” Al shared shortly after becoming part of the Celtics in 2016. Al’s relentless work ethic and commitment to the sport were a result of his father’s admiration for his career and dedication. Tito is proud of his son’s accomplishments, both on and off the court.

“This kid worked so hard to become a good all-around player, and not only a good basketball player, but a good person,” Tito remarked. “That’s what I love the most about him, he’s just so humble and dedicated and just so disciplined.”

A Shift in Perspective For Al Horford 

After several years in the NBA, Horford began his journey to fatherhood, which gave him a fresh perspective on both his career and life in general.

Horford mentioned that fatherhood was something he valued on the Boston Celtics’ YouTube channel called ‘View From The Rafters’ in March 2023. Stating that fatherhood gave him a ‘great feeling.” 

The Celtics big man spoke about wanting to always be a father. “It’s something that I absolutely love, I always wanted to be a dad and have my own family.” 

Having my first child gave me a lot of perspective,” he reflects.  “It made me grateful and more focused on making everything work, understanding that I have a job to do and there are expectations of me.” 

Horford’s character and dedication are evident in his balance of professional commitment and personal responsibility.

Horford has benefited greatly from his wife’s support in managing the challenges of fatherhood and his demanding career. 

“My wife has been a huge support for me, making it easier for me to do what I need to do on the court,” he shares.
