Rhonda Smith-Banchero and Paolo Banchero Reflect on UW, Family, and Seattle Hoops

Rhonda Smith-Banchero and Paolo Banchero speaking together about their basketball journeys and UW roots.
Rhonda Smith-Banchero didn’t expect nostalgia to strike her as quickly as it did when she returned to the University of Washington campus. The manifestation of it was a locked door. As she remembered texting her son, who is now an NBA All-Star, to let her in, she laughed. As Paolo opened the door, she realized that her son was literally unlocking her alma mater for her. It was a symbolic moment, not just a sweet one. A generation paved the way, and a new generation is now defining what’s possible.

The Sound of Seattle’s Basketball Heartbeat

Seattle has a strong basketball culture, but Paolo is still amazed by how much people respect Rhonda’s legacy. He remembered a Storm game last season when the crowd gave him a polite cheer after his face showed up on the scoreboard.
But when his mother’s face appeared with the words ‘UW basketball legend,’ the whole arena erupted. Fans lined up to tell Rhonda they had watched her dominate years ago. That’s when Paolo realized his mother was more than just a talented player; she was the foundation of women’s basketball fandom in the city. Rhonda has taken time to think about what that means.
“As I get further away from my playing days,” she reflected, “I’m grateful to have been one of the pieces that helped build what women’s basketball fandom is today.”

Revisiting Old Tape and Discovering a Truth

Paolo’s mother frequently mentioned her unstoppability as a child, but it seemed outlandish; he did not witness her resilience firsthand. The conversion of Rhonda’s old VHS tapes to DVDs changed everything. Paolo understood her claim after watching Paolo’s mother’s determination and strength in the footage.
“After I saw the film,” he said with a grin, “I realized—yeah, she was actually a beast.”
Pride was not the only reason. Context was provided to him. This was not solely about family lore. His work ethic and intensity had origins.

Growing Up Banchero: Lessons That Stick

Paolo spoke about the lessons his mother taught him, not only about footwork or shooting, but also about discipline, mindset, and consistency. He didn’t always appreciate it when he was younger.
“You think you don’t need it,” he admitted. “But when you get older, you’re thankful for every one of those lessons.”
He didn’t deny that Rhonda was tough on him. To be honest, she embraced it.
“I knew the amount of work it was going to take,” she said. “The opportunities that would come. We didn’t want any of our kids to take it for granted.”
She supervised him, even though he didn’t want to be supervised. She kept pushing him even though he pushed back. She’s honest about the tradeoff. She gave up certain parts of her mom’s relationship to shape the man and competitor he would become.

A Family Blueprint for Greatness

Paolo’s All-Star nominations, leadership role with Orlando, and sky-high ceiling aren’t accidental achievements. The intention was to do it. The structure was present. The foundation for it was established by Rhonda years before he was born.

He was prepared to face challenges with her before they met him. Before success arrived, she taught him to embrace the grind. She ensured that he was not surprised by any pressure, expectations, or work. When Paolo enters arenas across the league today, he brings all those lessons along.

A Legacy That Continues to Grow

Rhonda built the foundation for generations of women’s basketball players and fans during her Husky career. Seattle has been reintroduced to the national basketball scene in a new way thanks to Paolo’s rise. Their unique lineage is rooted in the same city, school, and relentless standard. It’s a story of family, culture, and the powerful echo of a legacy well-lived and still growing.
