When it is all said and done, future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson will go down as one of the greatest shooters the game of basketball has ever seen. The four-time NBA Champion was one of the centerpieces that helped lead the Golden State Warriors to the finals six times in ten years.
However, all great things come to an end, and after 13 years in a Warriors uniform, Thompson elected to sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Thompson signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavs. Thompson, forward Naji Marshall, and shooting guard Quentin Grimes spoke with the Mavs media during a press conference earlier this week.
“Coming here is just such a fresh start,” Thompson said. “Feeling just wanted again, like I bring great value, it just gets me excited to go out there and even work out after this press conference and get shots up. Yeah, there were times last year where it was tough, where it wasn’t as joyful as it was in the past.”
“It’s nice to kind of shed that and have a whole new fresh start, a whole new group of guys to get to know, co-workers, a whole new city. It’s really cool, and I’m going to embrace the heck out of this opportunity.”
Later in the press conference, Thompson, Marshall, and Grimes shared what the Dallas community could expect from each once they get settled.
“Well, I mean, I’m sure Naji and Quentin feel the same way, but there’s nothing really better than being able to give back and teach the game, especially to the youth,” said Thompson.
“Whether it’s just form shooting or defensive sliding, I look forward to working with the Mavs Foundation and getting involved at the grassroots level. Texas is a hotbed for youth sports, and I’m excited to share the knowledge I’ve gained from my career. That’s really the best part for any athlete—being able to pass down that knowledge to the next generation.”
“Well, definitely, I’m a huge basketball fan, so whatever level it is—high school, college—I know everybody,” said Marshall.
“Coming up, like Klay said, the grassroots out here is pretty good, so just tapping into that and giving my knowledge back, paying back what the game gave to me, I look forward to exploring and seeing what they have to offer. As far as the youngest players, I just want to teach them everything I can.”
Grimes added, “Yeah, I don’t think there’s a more rewarding feeling than being able to give back to your community and help out the youth. You never know who you might inspire by just being out there for a couple of hours. You might inspire the next generation, the next you. It’s great to always give back to the community because they do so much for us as a fan base and as a community. I know Dallas pretty well; it’s a big sports town with football, baseball, and basketball. Being able to give back to the youth is something I’m definitely excited to participate in.”
During the press conference, it became apparent that this trio of talented players is focused not only on their performance on the court but also on their impact off the court. Their values are evident in their commitment to giving back to the community and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Dallas fans are looking forward to the Mavs’ performance and the positive impact these players will have on the community. Thompson’s shooting skill, Marshall’s interest in grassroots involvement, and Grimes’ commitment to youth development are all part of the Mavericks’ potential to significantly impact both on and off the court for years to come.
