Mattel Announces WNBA Legend Sue Bird Barbie Doll For 65th-Anniversary Celebration

Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird adds another accolade to her impressive career. Mattel announces Bird will receive her own likeness as a Barbie doll. She is the first WNBA player to receive this honor. The doll is part of Mattel’s 65th-anniversary celebration and Summer of Sports campaign, highlighting women athletes.

Bird’s doll is a personal milestone and significant moment for young girls and boys who dream of becoming athletes. Bird never had athletic dolls to play with in her childhood. She hopes her doll will ignite children’s aspirations and inspire them to chase their dreams.

“I grew up playing with Barbies, so it’s kind of a surreal moment when something like this happens,” Bird told People. “This is going to have that impact of ‘seeing it and being it.’ You want to leave an impact that isn’t just defined by winning and losing.”

The four-time WNBA champion’s involvement in creating the doll ensures an accurate representation of her personality and style. The doll features Bird’s signature ponytail, which she carefully crafted to ensure no flyaways.

Bird’s legacy extends far beyond her impressive career statistics. She wants to inspire future generations to pursue their passions, whether on or off the court. With her Barbie doll, she hopes to show children they can be anything they want, including professional athletes.

Bird joins an impressive list of athletes featured in Mattel’s campaign, including Venus Williams, Christine Sinclair, and Federica Pellegrini. Her doll is the only one available for purchase, making it a unique opportunity for fans to own a piece of history.

As Bird eloquently says, “Now little girls and little boys are going to see a professional women’s basketball player in the form of a Barbie and they’re going to tap into that story, they’re going to tap into that career and they’re going to think ‘Oh, this is something I could do,’” Bird told People.
