A Champion On and Off the Field

Johnson, known for his leadership, entrepreneurial Spirit, and extensive sports experience, is enthusiastic about his new role.

“I’m excited to join the Washington Spirit’s investor group at such a pivotal time in the club’s history,” Johnson said. “Partnering with a visionary like Michele Kang and her team to advance the growth of the Washington Spirit and the NWSL is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to join the team and play my part to help elevate this organization.”

Johnson’s accomplishments speak for themselves. Since he transitioned from basketball to the business world, his legacy as a part-owner in some of the largest sports teams in the world has been built. He also owns a small stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), Washington Commanders (NFL), Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA), Los Angeles FC (MLS), and Team Liquid, in addition to the Washington Spirit.

Johnson has a track record of winning multiple championships as a part-owner. In 2014, Johnson became part-owner of the  Los Angeles Sparks and, in 2016, won their third WNBA championship. The Dodgers won the 2020 World Series title, and LAFC won their first MLS Cup in 2022. Team Liquid, Johnson’s eSports investment, has won multiple championships, including League of Legends and Dota 2 victories.

Washington Spirit’s Bright Future

The Washington Spirit has undergone an impressive transformation since Kang took over in 2022, establishing the club as a model organization in the NWSL and women’s sports more broadly. By having Johnson join the investor group, Johnson’s expertise in building championship-winning organizations aligns with Kang’s vision for the club, making the Spirit’s trajectory even more promising.

At a special event in Ida B, The Spirit will officially introduce Johnson as one of the club’s owners. Wells Middle School is on Friday. Audi Field will have him in attendance for the Washington Spirit’s home game against the Portland Thorns FC this weekend, where he’ll make his first appearance as a team owner.

As he adds another successful venture to his portfolio, Johnson’s involvement in the Washington Spirit highlights the increasing importance of women’s sports in the global sports landscape. His commitment to elevating the Spirit and helping shape the future of the NWSL will no doubt inspire countless young women and girls worldwide, further solidifying his legacy as a transformative figure in sports and business.

With the arrival of Magic Johnson, the Washington Spirit can now reach new heights on and off the field, maintaining their position as one of the most exciting and forward-thinking clubs in the NWSL.
