Luke Weaver is not a typical interviewer, and on World Series media day recently, the New York Yankees reliever gave another unforgettable moment. When Lauren Shehadi of MLB Network asked him what career he might pursue if he weren’t a pitcher, Weaver’s response veered from the unusual to the downright funny.
Weaver’s initial answer, “underwater basket weaver,” left Shehadi and the media with raised eyebrows. As he attempted to explain, Weaver said, “And hear me out, play on words. I was definitely a water kid then, you know, ear troubles, tubes that I had to get out of that.” His childhood experience with swimming and ear issues made the idea both oddly specific and humorously fitting.
Weaver moved on to other pursuits.
“So now I think, I would love to be a golfer but realistically I would like to combine some type of drawing slash … I don’t know.” In classic Weaver fashion, he ultimately landed on, “I don’t know.”
The unique journey through his thought process kept things interesting, even though his hypothetical career path was unclear.
The contrast between Weaver’s serious accomplishments on the mound and this lighthearted moment off the field is stark. Weaver’s 83 innings of work with the Yankees in 2024 led to an impressive season for him, with 7-3 and a 2.89 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and 103 strikeouts against just 26 walks. His postseason stats have been similarly impressive, with a 2.61 ERA, a 0.77 WHIP, and 12 strikeouts with only one walk in 10 1/3 innings.
Weaver’s pitching speaks for itself so there’s no need for him to decide on a career beyond baseball at 31. His unique personality off the field only enhances his appeal, making him not only one of the Yankees’ most dependable relievers but also one of MLB’s most captivating interviewers.
