Luka Dončić: How Fatherhood Prepared Him for the NBA Season

In December 2023, Luka Dončić and his fiancée, Anamaria Goltes, became the first-time parents of their daughter Gabriela.  After the birth of his daughter, he would return to the Dallas Mavericks lineup, which was soon followed by. Examining the experience, “First of all, it was the happiest day of my life. I got the baby, but then today’s game was a big rollercoaster, too,” Doncic said after the Mavs were defeated by the Thunder 126-120. “I’m so sad we didn’t win this game, but man, we gave a big, big effort.”

Fast forward, the Dallas Mavericks superstar is stepping into the upcoming NBA season with a renewed sense of purpose and focus. During the team’s media day, the All-Star discussed how fatherhood has enhanced his life and given him a new perspective on the new season. When reflecting on his summer, Luka emphasized balancing his personal and professional commitments.

“Well, it was big time, you know. Obviously, I had some stuff to do, went straight to the national team. But after national team, you know, got some rest, be a dad like you said. So, it was a really great summer, but now we’re ready to work,” he said.

Following an intense summer representing Slovenia in an international competition, Dončić took a break to spend quality time with his family. Being a dad has brought about new priorities for him, and it’s evident that this personal milestone has impacted his outlook on basketball. In addition to his national team duties, Dončić also managed to allocate time for his family, which he hinted was necessary for his mental and emotional reset ahead of the season.
