The tragedy of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, killed while biking by an alleged drunk driver, has caused great turmoil in the hockey world. The Columbus community, NHL, and fans worldwide are mourning the loss of one of the game’s brightest stars and his beloved brother due to this devastating event.
“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy,” the Blue Jackets said in a statement. “Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but, more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew.”
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement:
“While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother, and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
“Gaudreau often told the story of how his father taught him to skate as a child in his home state of New Jersey and he carried that same youthful passion throughout his 11 NHL seasons. A skilled playmaker, Gaudreau participated in the NHL All-Star Game seven times where he was always a fan favorite, particularly while showcasing his talents in the various skills competitions for which he was so well suited.”
Before this tragedy, Johnny Gaudreau was known for his exceptional skills on the ice and his unwavering commitment to charitable work. Johnny Gaudreau’s connection to the communities he was a part of was well-known throughout his career. His NHL career began in Calgary, but he continued to shine as a critical player for the Blue Jackets in Columbus. Gaudreau’s charitable endeavors were diverse. He and his family passionately established the Johnny Gaudreau Scholarship Golf Tournament at Gloucester Catholic High School, his alma mater. In Egg Harbor City, NJ, this annual event raised funds to offer scholarships and tuition assistance to underprivileged students. Gaudreau’s dedication to reinvesting in the school that impacted him was a testament to his gratitude and desire to help others succeed.
In Columbus, Gaudreau’s charitable spirit continued to flourish. His on-ice performance and off-ice contributions led him to become a beloved figure. He was particularly notable for his work with the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation, where he often participated in events and initiatives that supported youth hockey, education, and health programs.
In the 2023-24 NHL season, Johnny Gaudreau announced a significant initiative to support men’s mental health, an issue close to the heart of his teammate, Patrik Laine. Gaudreau pledged to donate $1,000 for every point he scored, whether a goal or an assist, from February 13 to April 16, with the cumulative total added to Laine’s contributions as part of Laine’s Give Back program.
The Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation collaborated to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health initiatives. The OhioHealth Foundation’s men’s mental health services and programs received the funds, which provided crucial support to those in the central Ohio community who were struggling.
“Mental health is a very important issue, and one that is personal for Patrik, so I am happy to be able to support my teammate and the work that the OhioHealth Foundation is doing in support of men that are struggling in our community,” Gaudreau said when announcing his participation in the program.
Gaudreau and his brother’s heartbreaking loss will still impact the community as a lasting tribute to his compassion and care legacy.
