Tatum wasn’t the only hometown hero making a return at Sunday’s St. Louis Cardinals game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tatum’s former classmate Matthew Tkachuk, an NHL Champion with the Florida Panthers, made a special appearance. The duo threw out the first pitch, highlighting St. Louis’s pride for its native sons reaching the pinnacle of their respective sports.
“Yeah it’s actually really cool when you think about it,” Tkachuk told Tracey Myers of NHL.com. “Everyone from St. Louis, whether they were going to watch or not, with having both of us in, I’d say there’s a lot of people, especially the kids we grew up with and families and people who know us, they’re pulling for both teams. It’s super cool to have that support back home for not only myself, but for the Celtics as well.”

After unveiling the newly renovated basketball gymnasium, Tatum’s generosity was the day’s highlight. As the local kids packed the bleachers, the atmosphere was electric, and their excitement peaked when Tatum made a surprise appearance at the same place where he had perfected his skills as a young athlete.
Tatum expressed the importance of giving back to the community that had shaped him by reflecting on the moment’s significance.
“The first time I ever dunked a ball in a game was on this hoop in seventh or eighth grade,” he shared with “The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.” He continued, “It’s always been important for me to give back. I had this idea—thoughts and visions—when I was younger. Didn’t necessarily know how it would look, but now that I’m in a position where I can impact the places I grew up playing… I can help make things better.”
