Last week news broke that Ice Cube’s Big 3 league had offered Iowa Hawkeyes’ standout guard Caitlin Clark a massive five million deal to join the league.
“Caitlin is a generational athlete who can achieve tremendous success in the BIG3,” he said on X, according to TMZ.
“With our offer, Caitlin Clark can make history and break down even more barriers for women athletes.”
Ice Cube also touched on the WNBA players having to go overseas to provide for their family before the WNBA season starts in the summer.
“And they should have more than just one professional option in the US at a time when American pro sports leagues are being infiltrated by autocratic, anti-women regimes such as Qatar,” he said. “Our pathbreaking offer to Caitlin Clark demonstrates that BIG3 now offers another choice for athletes.”
Clark was recently asked about the Big 3’s offer and when did she first hear about it. , “the same exact time you all did.”
Clark has been the most talked about athlete in college basketball as a whole and is the projected number one pick in the WNBA draft later this year. However, that is not her current focus at that moment as she and the rest of the Hawkeyes were preparing to take on the Colorado Buffaloes in the Sweet Sixteen in Albany, New York.
“I honestly don’t talk about those things with really anybody,” Clark said. “I have other people that deal with it. They haven’t said a word to me about it. And, my main focus is on this team and helping us find a way to beat Colorado and hopefully win another one after that.”
Clark was also asked about the Team USA training camp invitation for the 2024 Olympic team. She said it was a dream of hers growing up, but she rather be in Cleveland, Ohio, playing for a National Championship. However, if that is not the case she will accept the Team USA invite.
However, if Clark elected to join the Big 3, Basketball Hall of Famer and Big 3’s champion coach Nancy Lieberman would love to have her on her team.
“I think her teammates would set her up for success if this is what she chose,” Lieberman said. “I would love to coach someone like Caitlin Clark. If given the opportunity, I certainly am not afraid of the moment.”
She also added, “I think it’s gonna push our friends at the W to increase salaries or some of the things that are gonna be negotiated in the CBA.”
Lieberman is no stranger with playing with the men as she was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers’ Summer League team 1980. She was also a member of the Utah Jazz’ Summer League team in 1986.
