The Skateboard Association (SBA) has made a significant move to unite passion, leadership, and innovation in skateboarding by officially introducing its co-founders, which includes NBA champion Gary Payton II. This announcement will help the SBA achieve its goal of elevating skateboarding worldwide, ensuring that both athletes and communities have the support needed to thrive.
The organization’s goal is to preserve the sport and strengthen its presence for generations to come, based on the values of empowerment and representation. The SBA is positioning itself as a voice for skateboarders worldwide by combining leadership expertise with forward-thinking strategies, elevating athletes’ perspectives, creating possibilities, and shaping the sport’s future.
The association has a unique highlight due to Gary Payton II’s participation. Payton II has long been admired for his community leadership and commitment to youth development, despite his fame as a basketball player, which includes an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors. The SBA’s shared vision for sports should be inclusive, innovative, and built to inspire the next wave of athletes, as reflected in his transition to skateboarding leadership.
“Big Bear has always been a natural home for altitude training and action sports, and we’re excited to welcome the SBA as they set their sights on our mountain community,” Visit Big Bear CEO Travis Scott told ESPN.
The mission of the SBA goes beyond competition. The organization’s aim is to develop new programs, expand resources, and create pathways for both professional and amateur skateboarders while focusing on strengthening communities. These initiatives aim to increase the voice of athletes, boost grassroots efforts, and promote skateboarding as a tool for personal growth and social impact.
“Skaters put more of their body on the line than athletes in most sports other than football,” he said. “Why don’t they get the same treatment as NBA players when they’re taking more risks than we are?”
