Memphis Grizzlies forward G.G. Jackson is making a name for himself in the NBA, but his story goes beyond just basketball. Long before he began grabbing rebounds and scoring points on professional courts, Jackson was capturing rhythms on the drums, an instrument that became an early love and still plays a significant role in his life.
Jackson’s spiritual household marked Jackson’s upbringing in South Carolina. He was introduced to the church by his father, a pastor, not only as a place of worship but also as a space for creativity and expression. Jackson discovered his passion for drumming during Sunday sermons and gospel music. “My father is a pastor, so I was raised in the church,” Jack shared. “God bless me with, not just the ability to play basketball, but the drums as well. I could play for the angels!”
Jac’s son was discovering new ways to drum, such as using tree branches or toothbrushes as makeshift drumsticks, before he could even form complete sentences. His interest in music wasn’t a sudden curiosity in his childhood. It was a fundamental part of his identity, a force that remained with him throughout every stage of his life. Jackson remains committed to his musical roots, despite the NBA athlete’s schedule. Upon his return to South Carolina, he continues playing in the church band and never ventures far from the community that raised him.
In April 2024, 57 members of Jackson’s congregation made a heartfelt pilgrimage to Memphis, indicating a strong connection. They traveled by bus to support Jackson at a Grizzlies game and join him in musical worship, bringing their instruments and voices to create a special moment that surpassed the game. The celebration was a tribute to community, faith, and the enduring ties between Jackson and those who shaped him.
“I started playing the drums when I was 2 or 3,” he said. “I still go crazy on the drums.” Whether he’s behind a drum kit or driving the lane on the court, G.G. Jackson brings the same energy, rhythm, and passion that have guided him since childhood.
Jackson is a reminder that grounding in faith, family, and creative expression can have as much influence as statistics or endorsements in an era when athletes are often defined solely by their numbers. His story is a dynamic mix of talent, tradition, and testimony —a rhythm that continues to inspire fans both in and out of the room.
