Dallas City Hall is planning a special ceremony on Wednesday, August 28th, to recognize Dallas Wings sixth-year guard Arike Ogunbowale for her impressive performance in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game. The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Mayor Eric Johnson and City Council Members will be present at CT in the Council Chambers to celebrate Ogunbowale’s exceptional achievement. The event is open to the public.
Ogunbowale earned the prestigious 2024 WNBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player title after delivering a record-breaking performance at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 20. Ogunbowale’s performance, which included new records for most points in a quarter, half, and game, helped lead Team WNBA to a thrilling 117-109 victory over Team USA.
In her fourth All-Star Game appearance, Ogunbowale demonstrated remarkable skill and perseverance. She set a single-quarter record with 21 points in the third period and added 13 more in the fourth to finish with a game-high 34 points despite a challenging start. Ogunbowale’s record-setting points were made during the second half, setting a new scoring benchmark.
Her game stats were impressive, with her shooting percentage of 10-of-20 from the field, 8-of-13 from three-point range, and averaging six assists, two steals, and three rebounds in 31 minutes. Team WNBA’s success was greatly aided by Ogunbowale’s performance, which secured her a second MVP title. Her first MVP award came in the 2021 All-Star Game, featuring a WNBA Team vs. The Team USA format. Maya Moore, Swin Cash, and Lisa Leslie are just a few of the elite players who have won multiple All-Star Game MVP trophies.
The recognition at City Hall highlights the rising importance of the Dallas Wings and Ogunbowale’s role as a leading player in the league. On April 24, Dallas City Council Members approved a significant 15-year agreement during the Wings’ recent visit to City Hall, and this celebration is now taking place. The team has signed a $19 million use agreement to play at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas Memorial Arena starting in 2026. Ogunbowale’s accomplishments demonstrate her individual talent and the increasing influence and support for women’s basketball in Dallas and beyond. Honoring her remarkable success and contribution to the sport is an invitation to the public.
