A group of kids from @ymcanyc had a once-in-a-lifetime memory on what seemed like an everyday day in New York City. During a visit to the NBA Store, the kids were surprised when two NBA players, Austin Reaves and Jake LaRavia, walked in with smiles, energy, and a big surprise in mind. The players decided to go on a full-on shopping spree instead of signing autographs and greeting each other briefly.
As the kids came to realize that this wasn’t just a meet-and-greet, there was a buzz of excitement in the store. Reaves and LaRavia were present to provide a personal, joyful, and unforgettable experience.
The rules were straightforward: select what you love. All clothing items, including jerseys, hoodies, sneakers, and hats, were permitted. The children sped through the aisles, their eyes wide, their hands full, and laughter reverberating throughout the store. Reaves and LaRavia moved right along with them, hyped up their choices, offered style advice, and celebrated every selection like it was a game-winning shot.
The reason was not the price tags. The focus was on seeing, supporting, and encouraging. For many of the kids, this was their first time experiencing something like this — having professional athletes, not only show up, but also show genuine interest in their happiness.
The moment was unique because of the authenticity, not just the generosity. Austin Reaves’ laid-back confidence was evident as he cracked jokes and easily connected with the kids. Jake LaRavia matched that energy, maintaining a lighthearted atmosphere and making sure everyone felt included.
Despite taking photos, sharing laughs, and discussing hoops, they also listened. The kids were not treated as a group; they were treated as individuals. That kind of presence goes a long way, especially when coming from athletes that kids look up to.
@ymcanyc finds these moments to be a great example of what community support can look like at its peak. For ages, the YMCA has provided a space for youth development, mentorship, and opportunities. The combination of that mission and positive role models from the NBA resulted in a powerful experience that transcended material gifts.
The jersey and sneakers acted as a reminder that you are significant and your future is important. Having that message will stay with you for far longer than any receipt.
